I received a devastating blow to my self-confidence in the first interview of my college years. I applied to be a host in our Student Acting Troupe and felt confident that I would be accepted. But one of the panel members told me: "You seem inadequate and you are a little vertically-challenged." My life has never been the same since. I used bigger heels to complement my height and psychological maneuvers and tricks to hide my lack of confidence. But no matter how hard I tried to look the part, there was still something missing.

As president of English Club, I organized the rehearsal of Snow White for an English party. Unfortunately, we could not find an actor to be the last dwarf. It had to be someone who was humorous by nature and fluent in English. Suddenly, all eyes turned to me, and I knew I would have to be the dwarf. To my great surprise and delight, once on stage, I was totally absorbed in the performance and my humorous nature was put to full use. As the dwarf, I was a big hit.

Yes, each of us is only one among millions of others, but each of us is an individual and each of us is unique. Cultivating our individuality will transform our lives, making of them a kaleidoscope of new colors and textures.

A world deprived of diversity would be a bland and boring place. The real tragedy is not being short or shy or ugly, but having your identity lost in a world in which everyone is a clone of a model cool boy or a flawless charming girl.

Given a choice, I would rather be ugly than live in such a world. I'd rather be a genuine dwarf accompanying a Snow White than be a Snow White among nothing but Snow Whites. I would rather be myself. I would contribute my individual and unique colors to create a more diverse universe. Please, be yourself.

How comfortable the life was! One day, that man wanted to enlarge his house, so he cut down all the trees. Then the autumn came without the protection. The strong wind blew the roof of the house into the sky. The whole house was gone with the wind. What a pity! But that’s the price people have to pay for destroying in the ecology balance. People shouldn’t be short-sighted. Protecting the environment is everyone’s task.

As you know, there are four kinds of pollution. They are air pollution, water pollution, waste pollution and noise pollution. But what can we do to solve the pollution？I think, firstly, we can make cars that don’t pollute the environment. We can ask companies to use modern clean technology. In some big cities, we can limit the number of cars. Secondly, we can try to use less water and make sure that we do not pollute the water. We can tell factories that they are not allowed to pour waste water into the lakes and rivers. Thirdly, we should not throw rubbish in parks and cities. We can pick up rubbish if we see it. We can put more rubbish bins in our parks and cities. Fourthly, we can live far from the noise and make the laws to limit the noise.

The air, water and the whole atmosphere directly influenced our lives, such as the air, people may cough and it will lead to cancer. So we must try our best to keep the world clean and tidy. To reach it, I want to put forward three points to everybody---Point 1：don’t spit and liter；Point 2：don’t draw on the wall；Point 3：clean the streets every day.

英语学科核心素养是学生在接受相应学段英语课程教育的过程中，逐步形成和提升的适应个人终身发展和社会发展需要的必备品格和关键能力，综合表现为四大素养，由语言能力、文化品格、思维品质和学习能力组成。就其关系而言，语言能力是基础要素，文化品格是价值取向，思维品质是心智表征，学习能力是发展条件。英语学科核心素养涵盖了知识、能力和态度，四大核心素养相互渗透，融合互动，协调发展，是所有学生应具有的、学以致用的基础性综合素养。

为了更好提高落实新课标，提高学生的核心素养，我结合核心素养的四个方面谈一下自己的体会和建议。

一、探究课程内容，提升语言能力

语言能力是指在社会情境中，以听、说、读、看、写等方式理解和表达意义、意图和情感态度的能力。英语语言能力构成英语学科核心素养的基础，是学生发展文化品格、思维品质和学习能力的依托。英语语言能力的提高有助于学生拓宽文化视野，丰富思维方式，在全球化背景下开展跨文化交流。

教师要深入研读语篇，把握教学核心内容。研读语篇就是读者对语篇的主题、内容、文体结构、语言特点、作者观点等做深入的解读。教师要积极研究如何在教学中落实培养学生学科核心素养的目标，探索有效的教与学的方式，努力实践以主题意义为引领的英语学习活动观，实施深度教学。教师必须深入研究课程内容，提炼重点，设计有效的教学活动，通过听说读写训练，提高学生的语言能力。

二、发掘优秀文化思想，培养文化品格

文化品格是指对中外文化的理解和对优秀文化的认同，是学生在全球化背景下表现出的文化意识、人文修养和行为取向。文化品格体现英语学科核心素养的价值取向。文化品格的培育有助于学生树立世界眼光，增强国家认同感和家国情怀，学会做人做事，成长为有文化修养和社会责任感的人。

思维品质指人的思维个性特征，反映其在思维的逻辑性、批判性、创造性等方面所表现的能力和水平。思维品质体现英语学科核心素养的心智发展。思维品质的发展有助于提升学生分析问题和解决问题的能力，从跨文化的视角观察和认识世界，对事物作出正确的价值判断，促进学生的深度学习。

具体而言，学习理解类活动主要指基于语篇的学习活动。以解决问题为目的，鼓励学生从语篇中获得新知，通过梳理、概括、整合信息，建立信息间的关联，形成新的知识结构，感知并理解语言所表达的意义和语篇所承载的文化价值取向。迁移创新类活动主要指超越语篇的学习活动。通过自主、合作、探究的学习方式，综合运用语言技能，进行多元思维，创造性地解决陌生情境中的问题。英语学习活动的设计应注意.情境创设要尽量真实，注意与学生已有的知识和经验建立紧密联系，力求直接、简洁、有效。教师要善于利用多种工具和手段，思维导图或信息结构图，引导学生通过自主与合作相结合的方式，完成对信息的获取与梳理、概括与整合、内化与运用，教会学生在零散的信息和新旧知识之间建立关联，归纳和提炼基于主题的新知识结构。

今天我们在这里举行会议是为了迎接20xx年的第一场战役，也就是第一次质检，当然，我们的最终目的是迎接高考。现在，英语学习进入了一个非常关键的阶段，也是一个瓶颈阶段。不少高三学生虽然努力学习英语，但仍然没有明显的进步，有时会感到力不从心，手足无措。其实最主要的原因可能在于学习方法上出现了一些问题。在这里我给大家提几点建议供大家参考。

一、制定计划。要想学好一门语言，首先要一个切实可行的计划，用以指导自已的学习，古人说得好“凡事预则立，不预则废。”做事有计划就不会打乱仗，也不会感到盲从。

二、专心听课。课堂是获取知识的主要来源，上课是学生进解和掌握基础的基本技能并在此基础上发展认知能力的一个关键环节，这就要求同学们始终保持高度集中的注意力，力争在课内就把一节课的内容记住，当堂消化。

三、及时复习。知识贵在落实，课后及时复习能加深和巩固对新知识理解和记忆，系统在掌握新知识以达到灵活运用，即知识迁移的目的。

四、掌握正确的记忆方法。英语是一门记忆很强的学科，要大量积累词汇。很多同学最烦记单词，总是抱怨记不住，以致于丧失了信心。这是因为你没有了解到记忆的规律，没有掌握记单词的技巧。现在我给大家介绍几种方法。

1、及时记忆法，要求上课时认真听讲，争取趁热打铁，当堂记住。

2、联想记忆法，如bridgroom和brid。有room的是新郎

3、分类记忆法，把单词分门别类，如动物、植物类。

4、感官记忆法也叫运动记忆法。尽可能发用多种感官，耳听、口读、手写、眼看、心记等。

5、构词记忆法，通过分析词根、前缀、后缀、派生和合成等记忆单词。

6、情景记忆法，把某个单词放在一个句子或者一段话中去记忆。

7、比较记忆法，反义词、同义词、同音词。

8、拼读记忆法，读准单词的发音是记住单词的前提，拼读记忆首先要求把单词读准确，充分认识单词的读音与拼写之间的关系。如nthusiastic

9、循环记忆法，任何先进的单词记忆法都必须进行反复记忆。学了可能会遗忘，为了防止遗忘，一定要不断发进行阶段性复习。可以把单词和重点句子写在长片上放在口袋里或贴在桌子上、放在枕头连随时记忆。有些单词不是你记不住，而是你重复的次数不够多。

五、培养良好的语感。什幺是语感？语感具有一听就清，一说就顺，一写就通，一读就懂的功能。那幺，怎样培养语感呢？

1、从听力训练开始，在听力方面，一是听课文录音带，去感知模仿形成正确的语音、语调，二是听英语广播、电视节目及原声电影等，三是认真对待我们平时的听力训练，要沉着、冷静、细心，抓关键词，瞄准下一个句子和题目。

2、朗读、背诵是培养语感的捷径。主要是多读课文及听力教材，要将一个单词读准，一个句子读顺，一篇文章读烂，平时朝读时要最大声、最快速、最清晰地读。通过诵读，同学们可对文章的语意、语法、语气、语调、节奏、重音了然于心。

3、要进行广泛阅读。阅读是吸收语言材料的最好途径，实践证明，学生阅读面越宽，语言实践越大，阅读理解能力便越强。只有通过读，才能够获得最大的实践量，才能享受到学习外语的真正甜头和学习的乐趣。阅读的数量多了，一些常用词汇、句式结构自然在脑子中形成了印象，也就逐渐形成了语感。现在我们每天至少应阅读一两篇文章。

4、多积累多写作是培养语感的必经之路。在平时写日记、周记，考试时尽量使用通过积累的高级词汇和句型，这样才能有效地提高写作水平。

六、要注重课本，排查要点，各个击破。这几年高考中都有课文中的原句子，同学们要善于发现隐藏在课文中的命题胚胎。

七、要持之以恒，孜孜不倦。俗话说“一日学，一日功”，“一日不学，十日空”。也就是要讲究一个“勤”字，做到天天读，天天背，天天练，天天总结，养成一种好习惯，这样你就离成功不远了。

八、要提高自已的应试素质，把平时的考试当作高考，把高考当作平时的考试。

九、相信自己，强烈的自信心和必胜的信念是我们最大限度地发挥水平的致胜法宝。我们每个人身上都有巨大的潜力有待开发，一定要珍惜时光，找准人生的奋斗目标，不断努力，最大限度开发你的潜力，你是最优秀的。

when we are appreciating the passionate melody of gloria estefan, we could hardly imagine that she could return to the stage after her paralysis. in the year 1990, this cuban singer was knocked down in a traffic accident, and the doctor declared that she might never walk again. but gloria did not give up and kept up constant exercising.

just one year after the disaster, she stood up again and presented this encouraging song at the atlanta olympics.

whenever i think of gloria, i can’t help recalling my memory seven years ago, when i first entered university. naturally shy, ordinary looking, average scores in study, just like an ugly duckling, i seemed to be the least outstanding one in my class. and the successive failures in the beginning led me into despair.

“am i destined to take the back seat to others?” unwilling to submit to the fate, i paid more efforts on my study as well as many other activities, film dubbing, recital, drama… cause i just want to catch every little opportunity to prove myself. constant effort yields sure success.

today, game theory applies to a wide range of behavioral relations, and is now an umbrella term for the science of logical decision ****** in humans, animals, and ***puters.

next, i'll give you an example.

the prisoner's dilemma is a standard example of a game analyzed in game theory that shows why two ***pletely "rational" individuals might not cooperate, even if it appears that it is in their best interests to do so. it was originally framed by merrill flood and melvin dresher working at rand in 1950. albert w.

tucker formalized the game with prison sentence rewards and named it, "prisoner's dilemma" (poundstone, 1992), presenting it as follows:

two members of a criminal gang are arrested and imprisoned. each prisoner is in solitary confinement with no means of ***municating with the other. the prosecutors lack sufficient evidence to convict the pair on the principal charge.

they hope to get both sentenced to a year in prison on a lesser charge. simultaneously, the prosecutors offer each prisoner a bargain. each prisoner is given the opportunity either to:

betray the other by testifying that the other ***mitted the crime, or to cooperate with the other by remaining silent. the offer is:

if a and b each betray the other, each of them serves 2 years in prison

if a betrays b but b remains silent, a will be set free and b will serve 3 years in prison (and vice versa)

if a and b both remain silent, both of them will only serve 1 year in prison (on the lesser charge)

it is implied that the prisoners will have no opportunity to reward or punish their partner other than the prison sentences they get, and that their decision will not affect their reputation in the future.

next, i will invite two students to simulate this experiment.

because betraying a partner offers a greater reward than cooperating with him, all purely rational self-interested prisoners would betray the other, and so the only possible out***e for two purely rational prisoners is for them to betray each other.[1] the interesting part of this result is that pursuing individual reward logically leads both of the prisoners to betray, when they would get a better reward if they both kept silent. in reality, humans display a systemic bias towards cooperative behavior in this and similar games, much more so than predicted by ****** models of "rational" self-interested action.

[2][3][4][5] a model based on a different kind of rationality, where people forecast how the game would be played if they formed coalitions and then they maximize their forecasts, has been shown to make better predictions of the rate of cooperation in this and similar games given only the payoffs of the game.[6]

我上高中后渐渐地开始成功,当时有一个篮球运动员叫克里斯·韦伯,他当时是NBA选秀的第一名,所以在我还是高一的时候,我十四、五岁左右我身边的人都告诉我说,你永远没办法像克里斯那样出色,因为克里斯很强壮,而且力气也很大,但是你跑得不快,弹跳力也不行,你永远也不可能成为他。但是我小时候,已经听过这种话了,那么我怎么做呢?

He explained how to grow corn, hunt and live in the wilderness. Soon the Pilgrims and the Indians became good friends.

The Pilgrims worked hard . By November 1621 everyone had food and a home. There was hope for the future. The Pilgrim leader, decided to celebrate with a dinner for the Pilgrims and the Indians. He wanted to give thanks to God.

This was the first Thanksgiving dinner and it lasted for three days.

Today the traditional Thanksgiving meal is similar to the first.

People eatroast turkey, sweet potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie.

几乎所有人都明白中国有一句老话:少壮不努力，老大徒伤悲。透过阅读历史，我们从一个又一个的案例当中得知，这句话被证实是真确的。

不用说都明白，在青年时期，人的智力和身体状况都是一生中的，这也是一个人一生中的时期。在这个处处都不停地转变，飞快地发展的世界里，年轻使人相对地用更少的时光去学习和领悟新知。在这时，很少人会困在从事业上来的压力下，家庭和健康问题也比较小(就是说不是没有--译者)。所以，一个清醒的`脑袋加上巨大的能量就会成就人生中不一样方面的成功。

当然，我们都明白:没有挫折就没有获得。如果我们没有好好努力去利用年轻带给我们的优胜之处，那就没有可能获得任何的成功。作为中学生，我们就应做到去学好每一个科目，这样的话，我们就能够为将来即将应对的挑战做好准备。

Hello, I'm Severn Suzuki speaking for E.C.O. - The Environmental Children's Organisation. 大家好，我是Severn Suzuki，我代表儿童环境组织来此演讲。

We are a group of twelve and thirteen-year-olds from Canada trying to make a difference:VanessaSuttie, Morgan Geisler, Michelle Quigg and me. We raised all the money ourselves to come six thousand miles to tell you adults you must change your ways. Coming here today, I have no hidden agenda. I am here to speak for the countless animals dying across this planet because they have nowhere left to go. We cannot afford to be not heard. 我为这个行星上无数正在垂死的动物而演讲，因为它们几乎已经无处容身了。

In my life, I have dreamt of seeing the great herds of wild animals, jungles and rainforests full of birds and butterfilies, but now I wonder if they will even exist for my children to see. 我一生的梦想就是能看到成群的野生动物，茂盛的丛林和大片的雨林中到处是鸟类和蝴蝶在飞舞。但是现在我想知道我们这些小孩是否还能再看到它们？

You don't know how to fix the holes in our ozone layer. You don't know how to bring salmon back up a dead stream. You don't know how to bring back an anim

al now extinct.And you can't bring back forests that once grew where there is now desert. If you don't know how to fix it, please stop breaking it! 您不知道怎么去修补大气的臭氧空洞，您也不知道怎么去从死亡的河流中拯救鱼类，您更不知道如何把灭绝的动物复苏，您也不能把沙漠中从前完整的森林带回来。如果您不知道如何拯救，那么请您停止破坏吧！

Here, you may be delegates of your governments, business people, organisers, reporters or poiticians - but really you are mothers and fathers, brothers and sister, aunts and uncles - and all of you are somebody's child. 在这里，您可能是您政府商业人士的代表、组织者、记者或政客。但您们也是父亲和母亲、兄弟和姐妹、阿姨和叔叔，你们都会或多或少的为了下一代而活着。

In my country, we make so much waste, we buy and throw away, buy and throw away, and yet northern countries will not share with the needy. Two days ago here in Brazil, we were shocked when we spent some time with some children living on the streets. I can't stop thinking that these children are my age, that it makes a tremendous difference where you are born, that I could be one of those children living in the Favellas of Rio; I could be a child starving in Somalia; a victim of war in the Middle East or a beggar in India. 我永远不能忘记这些和我同龄的孩子，当你出生的时候，他和我们真的很不相同，我也许生活在贫民窟，也可能是终日饿着肚子的.小孩，也可能是中东战争的牺牲品，或者印度的小乞丐。

I'm only a child yet I know if all the money spent on war was spent on ending poverty and finding environmental answers, what a wonderful place this earth would be! 我只是一个小孩，然而我知道，要是把花在战争上的钱，用在找寻环境问题答案上来，或用在结束贫穷并找到解决的方案上来，这个星球将是个多么美好的地方啊！

At school, even in kindergarten, you teach us to behave in the world. You teach us: not to fight with others, to respect others, to clean up our mess, not to hurt other creatures, to share - not be greedy. 在学校，甚至在幼稚园，你们大人教我们如何处世，你们告诉我们不要打架，要尊重对方。找出答案，解决矛盾。去分享，而不是贪婪。

Then why do you go out and do the things you tell us not to do? 你们大人为什么去做与你们教导孩子相反的事情呢？

Do not forget why you're attending these conferences, who you're doing this for -- we are your own children. You are deciding what kind of world we will grow up in. Parents should be able to comfort their children by saying "everyting's going to be alright" , "we're doing the best we can" and "it's not the end of the world". 不要忘记你们为何而来到这里开会，你们为谁做事情？我们是你们的下一代，你们正在决定我们将要在一个什么样的环境中成长，父母需要能够宽慰孩子们，告诉他们“一切都没问题，那不是世界末日，我们正在尽其所能的改变”。

But I don't think you can say that to us anymore. Are we even on your list of priorities? My father always says "You are what you do, not what you say." 但我不能再相信这样的话了，孩子们还是你们的优选名单吗？我爸爸总是说：“听其言，观其行，是认识一个人最好的方法”。
